China has issued fierce warnings to the White House over the Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s planned trip to Taiwan, with the visit threatening to become a major point of friction between the superpowers.
Pelosi, the top Democrat in Congress and third in line to the presidency, is due to travel to Taipei, the capital of Taiwan, in coming weeks, despite President Biden warning that “the military thinks it’s not a good idea right now”.
China, which considers Taiwan a breakaway province, has issued private threats to the United States that are “significantly stronger” than over previous disagreements and included the suggestion of a “possible military response”, according to the Financial Times.
