{"id":17387,"date":"2023-04-09T12:58:13","date_gmt":"2023-04-09T08:58:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/geworld.ge\/en\/?p=17387"},"modified":"2023-04-09T12:58:15","modified_gmt":"2023-04-09T08:58:15","slug":"invite-drag-queens-into-schools-says-teachers-union","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/geworld.ge\/en\/invite-drag-queens-into-schools-says-teachers-union\/","title":{"rendered":"Invite drag queens into schools, says teachers\u2019 union"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Performers and LGBT+ authors challenge a \u2018heteronormative culture that dominates education\u2019, claim members in vote<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Drag queens should be invited into schools to make them more inclusive, the UK\u2019s biggest teaching union has said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Members of the National Education Union (NEU) voted to support LGBT+ initiatives including&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2022\/07\/26\/protesters-storm-first-drag-queen-storytime-primary-school-children\/\">drag queen storytime<\/a>&nbsp;and inviting LGBT+ authors to speak in schools at the union\u2019s annual conference in Harrogate on Wednesday.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They said that the activities would help to challenge the \u201cheteronormative culture and curriculum that dominates education\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Teachers voted through the motion after Shelby Millard, a teacher working at a secondary school in Sutton, Surrey, told delegates that Rishi Sunak \u201cis supporting the far-Right attacks on drag queen storytime\u201d and \u201cthe murder of beautiful souls like Brianna [Ghey].\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2023\/02\/16\/brianna-ghey-trans-murder-boy-girl-appear-crown-court\/\">Two teenagers were charged in February<\/a>&nbsp;with the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2023\/02\/14\/brianna-ghey-murder-possible-hate-crime-say-police\/\">murder of transgender teenager Brianna Ghey<\/a>, who was found with stab wounds in a park.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The union later issued a statement saying that Ms Millard \u201cunreservedly apologises for the wording of her conference speech\u201d after she met with NEU officials.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An NEU spokesperson said: \u201cShe apologises and withdraws the specific allegation that Rishi Sunak supported the murder of a young trans girl. Many trans and non-binary teachers feel strongly that the Government is not doing enough to support them but it is essential that we always debate policy solutions in calm and measured ways.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NEU members agreed that the Government is \u201ccreating a hostile environment\u201d for trans people by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/politics\/2023\/01\/16\/rishi-sunak-blocks-nicola-sturgeons-gender-reforms\/\">blocking Scotland\u2019s gender reform plans<\/a>&nbsp;to allow people over 16 to change their legal sex by signing a statutory declaration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This has \u201cencouraged the far-Right to organise&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2023\/02\/11\/tate-britain-protest-drag-queen-reading-london\/\">further attacks on drag queen storytime<\/a>&nbsp;and has created an atmosphere where hate crime can thrive,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MPs and groups such as the Women\u2019s Rights Network have raised concerns that drag queens provide\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2023\/03\/17\/drag-queen-teaches-pupils-conversion-therapy-spectacular-safeguarding\/\">sexualised adult entertainment that is not suitable for children<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"602\" src=\"http:\/\/geworld.ge\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17388\" srcset=\"https:\/\/geworld.ge\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/image.png 960w, https:\/\/geworld.ge\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/image-300x188.png 300w, https:\/\/geworld.ge\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/image-768x482.png 768w, https:\/\/geworld.ge\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/image-670x420.png 670w, https:\/\/geworld.ge\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/image-640x401.png 640w, https:\/\/geworld.ge\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/image-681x427.png 681w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><figcaption>Protesters outside a drag queen storytime performance at a library in Bristol<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Miriam Cates, Conservative MP, said: \u201cIt is highly concerning that the NEU is endorsing the exposure of young children to drag queens dressed and performing in a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2022\/07\/04\/sex-education-becoming-far-extreme\/\">highly sexualised way in the supposed safety of the classroom<\/a>. I can\u2019t believe that most teachers or parents would support this and I would urge the NEU to revisit some basic safeguarding principles.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tanya Carter, from Safe Schools Alliance, said: \u201cNEU\u2019s persistence in abandoning established safeguarding the minute they are distracted by glitter and rainbows brings the entire teaching profession into disrepute. This is an insult to our members and all other teachers who work incredibly hard to protect children.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The NEU will encourage all schools to set up LGBT+ spaces after the motion was voted through on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Members said that the spaces should allow trans pupils to \u201cspeak, discuss and explain their thoughts, feelings and experiences without fear\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The union claimed that nearly 20 years after a ban on the promotion of homosexuality by local authorities and schools under Section 28 of the Local Government Act 1988 was lifted, that \u201ctoo many students still go through an education experience which isn\u2019t LGBT+ inclusive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5><strong>\u2018Equality framework protects everyone\u2019<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Mary Bousted, joint general secretary of the NEU, said: \u201cInclusive teaching is essential for students who are LGB, trans or non-binary, and has also been shown to bring many benefits for all students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She added: \u201cThe Government is seriously failing to support trans people which means the creation of LGBT+ spaces and networks in schools and colleges is now more necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A government spokesman said: \u201cWe took action on this [Scotland Gender Recognition Reform] Bill because it has real implications for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/politics\/2023\/01\/13\/rishi-sunak-admits-concern-nicola-sturgeons-gender-reforms\/\">how these issues are treated on a UK-wide basis<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis includes impacting single-sex spaces and services, and the creation of two gender recognition regimes in the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have a long established UK-wide equality framework that protects everyone &#8211; including transgender people &#8211; from discrimination, harassment and victimisation and advances equal opportunity for all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/\">https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Performers and LGBT+ authors challenge a \u2018heteronormative culture that dominates education\u2019, claim members in vote Drag queens should be invited into schools to make them more inclusive, the UK\u2019s biggest teaching union has said.
