Although both Georgia and Ukraine were formerly parts of the Soviet Union, the latter was on the frontier with NATO which led it to be prioritised for hosting some of the superpower\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/militarywatchmagazine.com\/article\/china-strongest-bombers-tu160-1990s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a0most advanced equipment<\/a>, inheriting quantities which far surpassed all other successor states with the exception of Russia. The BuK system and other mobile short and medium ranged air defence assets played a key role in allowing Georgia to hold its own against the Russian Military in 2008 for close to two weeks, with the Russian Air Force having struggled profusely to neutralise them due to a total neglect for air defence suppression capabilities after the USSR\u2019s disintegration and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/militarywatchmagazine.com\/article\/this-strike-fighter-would-have-been-perfect-for-war-in-ukraine-why-russia-doesn-t-have-any-sead-foxbats-left\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">retirement\u00a0<\/a>of the Soviet fleet of dedicated air suppression aircraft. Russia eventually succeeded in tackling Georgia\u2019s air defences primarily through the successes of its ground offensives, which allowed it to neutralise such assets without relying on air support.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"789\" height=\"420\" src=\"http:\/\/geworld.ge\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/geworld.ge\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/image.png 789w, https:\/\/geworld.ge\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/image-300x160.png 300w, https:\/\/geworld.ge\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/image-768x409.png 768w, https:\/\/geworld.ge\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/image-640x341.png 640w, https:\/\/geworld.ge\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/image-681x363.png 681w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 789px) 100vw, 789px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The BuK system is currently by far the most capable air defence asset in the Georgian armed forces, with the country\u2019s defence ministry slamming \u201cthe incorrect information spread by experts or individual media outlets\u201d from Ukraine claiming that the system was gifted rather than purchased. \u201cIt seems that Ukraine handed over Buk air defence systems to Georgia for free, which is not true,\u201d it said, adding that Georgia \u201chad received the Buk systems in 2007 through a multi-million-dollar purchase. This was done under a secret agreement, which is why we cannot provide more specifics.\u201d The ministry elaborated that although providing humanitarian assistance, Georgia \u201chas repeatedly stated its clear position\u201d on supplies of weapons and dual use goods to Ukraine. It further defended its decision not to deplete its own stocks of U.S.-supplied Javelin anti tank missiles to equip Ukraine despite pressure from Kiev and some of its Western supporters to do so.\u00a0Although the Georgian state has been conservative in its support for Ukraine\u2019s war effort, Georgian nationals have played a leading role in the conflict with the Georgian Legion being among the most\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/militarywatchmagazine.com\/article\/georgian-legion-examine-militia-ukraine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">prominent of foreign units<\/a>\u00a0and one of the very first formed to fight both Russian forces and militias from Ukraine\u2019s Russian ethnic minority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"770\" height=\"420\" src=\"http:\/\/geworld.ge\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/image-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17335\" srcset=\"https:\/\/geworld.ge\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/image-1.png 770w, https:\/\/geworld.ge\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/image-1-300x164.png 300w, https:\/\/geworld.ge\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/image-1-768x419.png 768w, https:\/\/geworld.ge\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/image-1-640x350.png 640w, https:\/\/geworld.ge\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/image-1-681x371.png 681w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 770px) 100vw, 770px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Ukraine\u2019s air defence network has become\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/militarywatchmagazine.com\/article\/ukraine-air-defence-s300-buk-expire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">increasingly depleted\u00a0<\/a>in its ongoing conflict with Russia, with multiple Ukrainian sources as well as Western media outlets highlighting that this was increasingly limiting the country\u2019s ability to respond to air and missile strikes. Although the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/militarywatchmagazine.com\/article\/slovak-donated-s-300-systems-destroyed-just-after-entering-ukraine-reports\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">country has received<\/a>\u00a0Soviet designed air defence systems from former Warsaw Pact states such as Poland and Slovakia, supplies of these have been limited while other NATO members have provided systems which are extremely short ranged and in many cases near obsolete such as the MIM-23 Hawk. Although the United States has pledged to provide a single unit of Patriot missiles, system\u2019s questionable\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/militarywatchmagazine.com\/article\/patriot-save-ukraine-combat-record\">combat record<\/a>, very small numbers, and lack of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/militarywatchmagazine.com\/article\/reassures-russia-patriot-green-light\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">American supporting personnel\u00a0<\/a>mean its impact will likely be very limited. The first Patriots are only expected to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/militarywatchmagazine.com\/article\/ukraine-patriot-2024-congress-risks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">become operational in Ukraine<\/a>\u00a0in early 2024.
