{"id":17094,"date":"2022-08-11T14:02:07","date_gmt":"2022-08-11T10:02:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/geworld.ge\/en\/?p=17094"},"modified":"2022-08-21T10:11:30","modified_gmt":"2022-08-21T06:11:30","slug":"cpac-proves-trump-will-lead-conservative-movement-until-he-takes-his-last-breath-matt-schlapp-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/geworld.ge\/en\/cpac-proves-trump-will-lead-conservative-movement-until-he-takes-his-last-breath-matt-schlapp-says\/","title":{"rendered":"CPAC proves Trump will lead conservative movement until he \u2018takes his last breath,\u2019 Matt Schlapp says"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>DALLAS<\/strong>&nbsp;&#8212; Former President Trump\u2019s place atop the conservative movement was reiterated over the weekend at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/news-events\/cpac\">Conservative Political Action Conference<\/a>&nbsp;(CPAC) in Dallas, Texas, and the event&#8217;s organizers believe it will stay that way until he &#8220;takes his last breath.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump convincingly won the 2024 GOP presidential nomination straw poll taken at CPAC, and the former president also prevailed when Fox News Digital asked attendees in the hallways of the event. Florida&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/liz-cheney-would-find-very-difficult-support-desantis-because-trump-similarities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gov. Ron DeSantis<\/a>&nbsp;came in second on the 2024 presidential nomination question, at 24%,&nbsp;and is widely considered the clear next-in-line among many die-hard Trump supporters. Others simply prefer DeSantis these days.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>American Conservative Union chairman Matt Schlapp, who didn\u2019t want to &#8220;vote in a primary&#8221; so far away from the 2024 election when asked who he prefers, believes many\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/person\/donald-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">conservatives treat Trump like an incumbent<\/a>\u00a0president and his popularity is unrivaled.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;He comes into this race as the incumbent, so in most situations when you\u2019re the incumbent you\u2019re going to have the lion\u2019s share of support of everyone,&#8221; Schlapp told Fox News Digital backstage at CPAC Texas.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"http:\/\/geworld.ge\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image-3.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17096\" srcset=\"https:\/\/geworld.ge\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image-3.png 720w, https:\/\/geworld.ge\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image-3-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/geworld.ge\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image-3-640x360.png 640w, https:\/\/geworld.ge\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image-3-681x383.png 681w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><figcaption><strong>Matt Schlapp reveals CPAC straw poll at the 2022 CPAC in Dallas, Texas.\u00a0<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;There is this other piece which Donald Trump shares uniquely in American politics on the conservative side, and that is because he was so authentic about what he said he would do and then what he did do\u2026 this bond formed between the conservative movement and Donald Trump where he didn\u2019t just say he was going to move the embassy, he moved it,&#8221; Schlapp continued. &#8220;He didn\u2019t just say he was going to pick the next generation of Clarence Thomas, he picked three of them. He just went right down the line and did what he said he was going to do.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many CPAC attendees wore Trump merchandise, and the event\u2019s vendors offered just about anything a MAGA enthusiast could ever hope for. There were occasional &#8220;Make America Florida&#8221; hats and shirts in honor of DeSantis, but it was a far cry from the years-ago CPAC events when attendees wore gear to support their favorite Republican with a large variety of choices. These days it\u2019s almost all about Trump.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Schlapp cited the border, willingness to &#8220;take on&#8221; China and the economy as other key reasons conservative still largely adore Trump. In addition, Schlapp also believes that minority voters will support Trump if he decides to run again because their bank accounts are suffering under President Biden.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;He rekindled this idea that the Republican Party is the place of opportunity for people of color, and because of that it\u2019s an unshakable bond,&#8221; he said. &#8220;How many CPACs in a row where straw polls that we had demonstrate that? But, yet\u2026 it\u2019s almost like people are confused. They ask the question, \u2018Is he the leader in support from these folks?\u2019 It\u2019s like, yes! And I think he will be until he takes his last breath because of everything he did.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump, who\u2019s repeatedly teased making another presidential run in 2024 to try and return to the White House, captured 69% of ballots cast in the anonymous online straw poll, according to results announced by CPAC on Saturday. Mercedes Schlapp, Matt\u2019s wife who plays a key role at CPAC and served as White House senior communications director, added that she believes most Republican presidential hopefuls are waiting to see what Trump decides.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"http:\/\/geworld.ge\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image-4.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17097\" srcset=\"https:\/\/geworld.ge\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image-4.png 720w, https:\/\/geworld.ge\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image-4-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/geworld.ge\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image-4-640x360.png 640w, https:\/\/geworld.ge\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image-4-681x383.png 681w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Even DeSantis, they\u2019re watching to see what Donald Trump is going to do, I think that is a very important factor to consider,&#8221; she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the Schlapps clearly believe Trump is the leader of the modern conservative movement, they don\u2019t think the bar is particularly high when it comes to what it would take to defeat President Biden in a general election.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It was the media that told us Joe Biden was up to the job, they were clearly covering for him. He doesn\u2019t really do the job, and now the assumption he\u2019s going to be the nominee.
