He said the West\u2019s strategy in Ukraine &#8212; including economic sanctions on Russia and the provision of military aid &#8212; has failed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not the EU\u2019s job to take sides in this conflict, but to go between the two sides\u201d to help negotiations, Orban said an annual retreat in Baile Tusnad, Romania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Orban directly blamed Western long-range missile shipments for Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov\u2019s remark this week about annexing more Ukrainian territory. The Hungarian emphasized the need to understand Russia\u2019s position of requiring security guarantees that its territory can\u2019t be attacked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ukraine can\u2019t win the war with Russia, even with Western support, according to Orban. He said sanctions by the EU, the US, Canada and elsewhere haven\u2019t weakened Moscow but instead have caused instability in Europe. The rest of the world isn\u2019t joining in the repudiation of Russia, Orban added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Orban\u2019s stance of opposing stronger sanctions against and even fostering closer ties with Russia, as well as banning direct weapons transfers to Ukraine through Hungary, puts him at odds with most other EU and NATO members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His government is also in high-stakes negotiations with the European Commission on rule-of-law issues that could lead to a loss of crucial EU funds &#8212; to which Orban dismissively referred to as \u201cfinancial negotiations\u201d which will end with a deal soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Orban, 59, painted a bleak picture of ideological war between \u201cpost-Western values\u201d and the traditionalist societies of Central and Eastern Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those values \u201cwill never have a majority in this part of the world,\u201d he said, arguing against \u201cbecoming a mixed race nation\u201d and accepting Western stances on gender and LGBTQ issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bnnbloomberg.ca\/defiant-orban-doubles-down-on-russia-policy-arch-conservativism-1.1795834\">https:\/\/www.bnnbloomberg.ca\/defiant-orban-doubles-down-on-russia-policy-arch-conservativism-1.1795834<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Marton Kasnyik The West should stop arming Ukraine and work for a peace settlement instead, Hungary\u2019s prime minister told his supporters on Saturday.
