Catherine Cortez-Masto (D).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Associated Press called the race at 1:02 a.m. ET.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Laxalt, who was backed by former President Trump, defeated seven candidates in the primary. He had been widely viewed as the front-runner, though businessman and retired Army Capt. Sam Brown moved up in polling ahead of Tuesday\u2019s primary, in addition to spending more on television.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Laxalt had big GOP names behind him in addition to Trump, including Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) and a group aligned with Senate Minority Leader\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/mitch-mcconnell\/\">Mitch McConnell\u00a0<\/a>(R-Ky.).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Democrats have seized on Laxalt\u2019s vocal support for Trump\u2019s unproven claims the 2020 presidential election was stolen from him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Laxalt served as the co-chair of Trump\u2019s reelection campaign in Nevada in 2020. He also unsuccessfully ran for governor in 2018, losing to Gov. Steve Sisolak (D) by 4 points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The state\u2019s Senate race, along with its gubernatorial contest, is one of the most closely watched this midterm cycle, and both parties will face a tough road.
