{"id":16699,"date":"2022-03-26T05:03:26","date_gmt":"2022-03-26T01:03:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/geworld.ge\/en\/?p=16699"},"modified":"2022-06-11T07:20:25","modified_gmt":"2022-06-11T03:20:25","slug":"5500-children-are-on-nhs-waiting-list-to-change-sex","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/geworld.ge\/en\/5500-children-are-on-nhs-waiting-list-to-change-sex\/","title":{"rendered":"5,500 children are on NHS waiting list to change sex"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Campaigners voiced their fears after the number of youngsters seeking to change gender rose by a fifth.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 5,500 are in the queue for treatment at London\u2019s Tavistock and Portman Trust\u2019s Gender Identity Development Service (GIDS).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stephanie Davies-Arai, founder of the Transgender Trend campaign group, said that was \u201cconcerning\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cChildren do not have the life experience to know how to interpret what they are often experiencing. They\u2019re bombarded with messages about being trans and that all of their problems and insecurities and anxieties are because they\u2019re trans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey think these adolescent anxieties are down to being trans. They are sent down to the Tavistock and put on puberty blockers. It is easy to fall into this trap and it has been made worse by Covid.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trans issues campaigner Baroness Nicholson of Winterbourne called for a \u201cslow\u201d and \u201ccalm\u201d assessment of children who want to change gender.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Senior figures at Tavistock have expressed fears that \u201cthe list had grown substantially during the lockdown\u201d. Trust chairman Paul Burstow, a former Liberal Democrat health minister, said the growing waiting list was a \u201cpreoccupation\u201d for trustees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The figures are a big rise on an estimate made last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In January 2021 the Care Quality Commission (CQC) said after inspecting GIDS there were 4,600 on the list. It saw a spike in cases from 138 in 2010\/11 to 2,383 ten years later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the start of the last decade, most children referred for treatment were male-born, but female-born youngsters now dominate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The CQC found numerous failings after whistleblowers raised concerns that GIDS fails to support vulnerable children properly and has pushed them towards sex-change treatments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A recent review found doctors felt under pressure to adopt an unquestioning approach to children seeking to change their sex, while a lack of formal clinical guidance and stifled debate left many medics \u201cnervous\u201d about offering the \u201cmore robust support\u201d they want to deliver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-new-york-times-post wp-block-embed-new-york-times-post\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"m3VTZvqT9L\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimespost.com\/\">News<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;News&#8221; &#8212; New York Times Post\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nytimespost.com\/embed\/#?secret=y4ICzBfA5T#?secret=m3VTZvqT9L\" data-secret=\"m3VTZvqT9L\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Campaigners voiced their fears after the number of youngsters seeking to change gender rose by a fifth.
